The Hawaii Mars, also known as the Mars Water Bomber, used to fight forest fires. It is the world's largest flying tanker, situated on Sprout Lake, Vancouver Island, close to Port Alberni. The wing span is 200 feet, and carries a loaded weight of 90,000 lbs. It has a range of 5,000 miles. This tanker can take on water in excess of a ton per second, and 3 miles to complete. This aircraft was originally produced for the US Navy as a troop and cargo transportation on the islands of the Pacific. Also known as the Caulson flying tankers. The Mars water bomber is the only water tanker in the world that is still active in fire firefighting today. It remains on contract for regular use in firefighting. It was used in the Kelowna firestorm in August 2003, amoungst other fires in Canada and the US. Can you just imagine the sound of this aircraft on water???
The Philippine Mars is retired and will be taken to the National Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida this November, 2012. We could see where parts of this Mars had been taken apart for transport to Florida.
We were able to view this amazing aircraft from the entrance to the site, and on the water from the beach. What an amazing sight and to know the history of this aircraft. . We went up to Sprout Lake on Friday, the 6th. of Septermber. It was very warm at 33oC. A beautiful day, and having wanted to view this aircraft for a long time, so away we went. Only disappointment was the tours finished at the end of August! We were still able to get a good view of this enormous aircraft. Must put this on "bucket list" for 2013! To take the guided tour of the aircraft and museum on site. If aircraft is one of your "likes" this is a must.
